FAMILY
One known brother - Thomas, also christened in Tipton, Staffs.
Children in the 1881 census living at same address are - Elizabeth.
EDUCATION
Not known
OCCUPATION
On the birth certs of both his children, and in the 1851 census he is recorded as a Pudler, which is obviously some sort of forgeman in the iron works. On the marriage certificate of his son David Thomas, he is recorded as being a forgeman. Isaac Newton, the brother of his wife, also worked as a forgeman, and presumably was friendly with David, as David became a lodger with the Newton family where he met his future wife.
MARRIAGE
In the 1851 census David is recorded as living as a lodger at Level Road in Kingswinford, Staffs. This also happens to be the address of the Newton family. A daughter Ann M. is recorded as being a 15yr old of this family. Elizabeth the mother is the head of the household, and so her husband is dead by this time, however the youngest child is 3 months old at this census on 30th March 1851. Mrs Newton had 9 children between 20 yrs and 3 months, so presumably took David in as a lodger to help make ends meet. Thus in March 1851, Ann was 15 ( or just 16) yrs old, and was married in October of that year (when she had reached 16yrs?). David Sheldon married Ann Maria NEWTON in Dudley, St Thomas on 12th Oct 1851 - MC Dec quarter 1851, XVIII, 393. She then had her first child, David Thomas in December 1851. He must have been conceived on census night!
ADDRESSES
Although Ann lived in Kingswinford, they went back to St Thomas's Church in Dudley to get married, presumably because David's parents organised the wedding. Their first child David Thomas was born in Level Road, Kingswinford, Stourbridge, Staffs. William was born in Princes End, Tipton, Dudley. The address of David Thomas at his wedding was Broad Street, Kidderminster, although it's not clear if his parents lived there as well. Address in 1851 - birth of David Thomas was Level, Kingswinford, Stourbridge, Staffordshire, and in 1854 - birth of William was Princes End, Tipton, Dudley, Staffordshire.

NOTES
b) An Ann Maria Sheldon was born in Dudley, registered March quarter 1851, reference XVIII, 386. I'm not sure of the relevance of this.
d) Evidence that this David is "ours"
1 In the IGI this Thomas is down as a relative of Frances Sheldon
2 Thomas was a pudler as was David after him
3 Witness at marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth was a Mr Newton, which could explain why David was lodging in the Newton
household when he met his wife. They were all puddlers together!
