William, the eldest son of Ralph and Joyce Sheldon of Abberton, purchased the manor of Beoley from Richard Neville during the reign of Edward IV (1461-1483).
Barnard p 3 - "In the reign of Edward IV (1461-1483) William, the eldest son of Ralph and Joyce Sheldon of Abberton, purchased the manor of Beoley from Richard Neville, the Lord Latimer. This William, described as of Balford Hall, in the parish of Beoley, was a devoted adherent to the House of York, and so fought at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 at the side of Richard III."
This William Sheldon of Balford Hall, fought at Bosworth and eventually dies without issue in 1517 and buried in Beoley. His younger brother Ralph inherits his land.
Pearson in his book on St Leonard's Church in Beoley writes - "Ralph who married Joyce Ruding first came to Beoley. They had two sons, William and Ralph. After his father's death William fought for Richard III at the battle of Bosworth in 1483. After Richard's defeat William was attained, his lands forfeited and as a mark of disgrace his arms were reversed. He must have subsequently led an exemplary life because before he died in 1517 the attainder was removed and his lands restored"
The Bigland pedigree just has the 7 sons listed. BSP reads "WS, Eldest son, purchased Balford Hall in the parish of Beoley in the county of Worcester in the reign of Edward 4th of Richard Neville, Lord Latimer died in Sept 1517 and was buried in Beoley Church without surviving issue" The BSP sais that his wife is Joice
Most of the Sheldon family trees differ at this stage and it is safe to assume that the complete picture is still not known.
Joice name obtained from the BSP
BSP reads "Anne died without issue" - as daughter of William and Joice - she must have died before 1517 as William died without issue. |
