Called Rauffe Sheldon of Beoley on Worcs, he had 10 children. Married to Joyce Ruding.
Barnard p 3 states - "Ralph was the first Worcesteshire Sheldon to be associated with Beoley, some two miles north east of Redditch. He married Joyce Ruding, an heiress descended from a family of considerable antiquity in the county, with whom he became possessed of several other properties in Feckenham, Hanbury and Martin Hussingtree."
BPS "RS of Beoley in the county of Worcester, Esquire"
Joyce Ruding - See note about Husband Ralph concerning her name and wether Ralph married twice. She was definitely Joyce Ruding - I think I have mistaken two Ralph's!
BPS "Daughter and heir of ... Ruding" as the husband of Ralph
Children
William, the eldest son of Ralph and Joyce Sheldon of Abberton, purchased the manor of Beoley from Richard Neville during the reign of Edward IV (1461-1483).
Barnard p 3 - "In the reign of Edward IV (1461-1483) William, the eldest son of Ralph and Joyce Sheldon of Abberton, purchased the manor of Beoley from Richard Neville, the Lord Latimer. This William, described as of Balford Hall, in the parish of Beoley, was a devoted adherent to the House of York, and so fought at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 at the side of Richard III."
This William Sheldon of Balford Hall, fought at Bosworth and eventually dies without issue in 1517 and buried in Beoley. His younger brother Ralph inherits his land.
Pearson in his book on St Leonard's Church in Beoley writes - "Ralph who married Joyce Ruding first came to Beoley. They had two sons, William and Ralph. After his father's death William fought for Richard III at the battle of Bosworth in 1483. After Richard's defeat William was attained, his lands forfeited and as a mark of disgrace his arms were reversed. He must have subsequently led an exemplary life because before he died in 1517 the attainder was removed and his lands restored"
The Bigland pedigree just has the 7 sons listed. BSP reads "WS, Eldest son, purchased Balford Hall in the parish of Beoley in the county of Worcester in the reign of Edward 4th of Richard Neville, Lord Latimer died in Sept 1517 and was buried in Beoley Church without surviving issue" The BSP sais that his wife is Joice
Most of the Sheldon family trees differ at this stage and it is safe to assume that the complete picture is still not known.
Richard - Bigland (BSP) sais that Richard was the second son
John - BSP "JS of Pershore in the county of Worcs. and of London. 3rd son" no wife mentioned
Daniel - BSP reads "Daniel Sheldon of Spetchley in the county of Worcester, Esquire, 4th son, died before 1500"
Note that BSP gives him 2 wives, Eleanor and then Margaret who is said to be living a widow in 1510"
Maurice -BSP reads "Maurice, 5th son, died without issue"
John - BSP reads "JS 7th son mentioned in the will of his brother Ralph in 1545, died without issue"
Ralph - They had six sons and 5 daughters - all not yet included. This Ralph inherited from his elder brother William who fought at Bosworth and died in 1517. He appears to have become a large landowner, possible through his wife Philippa Heath.
Pearson sais - "Ralph, younger brother of William, inherited from him. On his marriage to Phillipa Heath he became a wealthy landowner. Ralph's tomb is adjacent to William's and was erected in 1601. Ralph's arms "Sheldon impaled Ruding" are now impaled Heath and Grove - which were Phillipa's inheritences. The crescent indicates that Ralph was the second son."
BSP reads "RS of Alberton in the county of Worcester, Esq. to whom his brother William Sheldon gave all his lands - died 21st Dec 1546, buried at Beoley 16th Jan following. Will dated 20th March 1545, proved 11th Feb 1546/7"
Mary - Was she married twice? Certainly to George FERRERS, but maybe first to Silvester (??)
